At McCarter & English, we view your first year as a journey, full of new ideas, hard work, education, and exciting opportunities for personal and professional development. Our New Associate (first year) Program begins with an in-depth orientation designed to acclimate you to the law firm environment and provide you with the core skills you will need to get you started as a practicing attorney. Our sophisticated legal information systems will provide you with the cutting edge technology that will help you get the most out of your research and optimize your efficiency.
The core of our training program is "M&E University," designed to teach you all the basic skills you will need to ensure professional success. In the fall, you'll attend in-house legal writing workshops, professional etiquette and time management seminars. Then, in the spring, you'll focus on the nitty-gritty of transactional and litigation law, including such topics as discovery, taking and defending depositions, negotiation skills, and contract drafting.
Supportive Mentoring Makes the Difference
In addition to formal training, each new associate is assigned a senior associate mentor and a partner mentor, which they maintain throughout their careers at M&E. To help you meet many different people from various disciplines within our practice areas, the mentoring program also sponsors numerous events throughout the year including cocktail get-togethers, sports activities and museum outings.
