Dr. Nathan Harrison is a Patent Agent in the Intellectual Property/Information Technology group. His work primarily focuses on patent preparation and prosecution in the fields of optics, physics, nanotechnology, medical devices, semiconductor manufacturing, and electrical engineering.
Before joining McCarter & English, Dr. Harrison worked for several years as an optics/laser engineer at Panasonic of North America.
Dr. Harrison received a Ph.D. in physics at the University of Texas at Austin in 2009. His dissertation work was conducted in close collaboration with the biomedical engineering department and probed the optical properties of small gold nanoparticles over a range of environmental and aggregation conditions. A full characterization of the optical output of nanoparticles makes them a useful tool to observe dynamic cellular processes in live tissue that occur on a sub-wavelength scale. As an undergraduate and early graduate researcher, Dr. Harrison also worked in atom cooling and trapping with lasers and the production of dilute gas Bose-Einstein condensates. Dr. Harrison also spent a summer at Notre Dame University as part of a team that developed a fiber-optic breakout apparatus to collect light from the muon detector plates in the Large Hadron Collider at CERN.
